The birth of a child is one of the most beautiful moments in life and why more and more families are turning to professionals to help them document it. Birth is a journey, the process of becoming a mother and a father, and will change you forever. My own birth experiences with my two beautiful daughters were very fast and furious. Everything was such a blur and I only wish I had something to look back on to remember the moments I missed.
What to Expect
When I photograph a birth I try to remain as inconspicuous as possible. It is important to me to document your labor and birth as though I wasn’t even in the room. I use natural or available ambient light whenever possible. I shoot with professional digital equipment, which allows me to work in low light situations which is helpful as statistically most births happen at night! Your safety and comfort will always be the top priority. If at any time my presence is making you uncomfortable please do not hesitate to ask me to stop or to step out of the room.
My client’s wishes about what is captured and documented are also always my top priority. Some are a bit understandably wary of birth photography as we all have images in our head that we would probably rather not have captured forever, however, birth is a beautiful process and need not be documented in a graphic manner. If a client prefers not to have some things documented or has special request I will do my best to accommodate.
After your baby is born I will stick around to capture your first moments with your child. If there are any other special requests please do not hesitate to mention them.
In the event of an unplanned c-section, I will most likely not be allowed to accompany you into the OR. Usually only one or at most two support persons are allowed in with you. If I am not chosen to accompany you, I will pass off my backup camera to one of the persons accompanying you in the OR. I will then proof those images along with everything I capture so that there will not be any gaps in the story line.
I like to meet with my clients sometime during their 3rd trimester for a coffee date. This meeting allows us to become more familiar with each other before the birth and eases the anxiety of having a “stranger” in the room. At this meeting we will go over your expectations, desires, and anything that you do or do not want photographed. I also like to follow up with a few emails as your due date approaches.
